Subject Description:

Audio Engineering and Studio Techniques combines lecture, demon-
strations and hands-on lab time to provide the student with a working
knowledge of recording procedures and techniques.

Subject Hours: 186 clock hours (132 classroom hours, 54 lab hours)

Performance Objectives:
  • Define basic audio terms and concepts.
  • Describe the differences between the different types of microphones.
  • Describe the different sections of a mixing console.
  • Describe the different components of a multi-track tape machine.
  • Correctly connect and route audio signals through a recording system including microphone
    connection, console, tape machine, monitor system and signal processors.
  • Describe, connect and use basic signal processors including compressors, gates, EQ,
    reverb and delay units.
  • Use a digital audio workstation to produce a multi-element sound track.
  • Prerequisites: None

    Week 5: Recording Procedures and Techniques
    Week 6: Recording Procedures and Techniques II
    Week 7: Mixing and Automation
    Week 8: Pro Tools Configurations and File Management
    Week 9: Technical and Maintenance Issues
    Week 10: MIDI, Elastic Audio and ProTools Editing
    Week 11: Studio Skills & Final Exam & Completing Final Project

    Basis of Grades:

    Mid-Term Exam: 20%

    Practical Skills 20%
    (Students must achieve at least 70% on their skills test to
    pass this course.)
